What Makes a Resume Summary ATS-Friendly?

An ATS-optimized summary does three things: it includes the exact job title from the posting, it contains 5–8 hard-skill keywords from the job description, and it includes at least one quantified achievement. Generic summaries like "passionate professional with excellent communication skills" score near zero — they contain no searchable keywords.

The examples below show a weak version (typical of most resumes) and a strong version (ATS-optimized) for each role. The highlighted keywords are the terms most commonly required in job descriptions for that role.

How to Write Your Own ATS-Optimized Summary

  1. Start with your job title — use the exact title from the job posting as the first 2–3 words.
  2. Add years of experience — "5 years" or "7+ years" gives ATS systems a parseable experience signal.
  3. List 4–6 hard skills — pull these directly from the "Required Skills" section of the job description. Use exact wording.
  4. Include one metric — a number (%, $, users, team size) proves impact and catches recruiter attention after ATS.
  5. Keep it 3–4 sentences — long summaries dilute keyword density; short ones leave value on the table.
  6. Run your ATS score — paste your resume into ResumeAI and check if the summary is pulling its weight.
